Gerald Youngblood, K5SDR authored several articles for QEX that describes the fundamentals of software defined radios and how the SDR-1000 was developed.  These articles provide the underlying principles of  the operation of software defined radios.

The series concludes with a description of a DC-65MHz transceiver (the SDR-1000) that will allow open software experimentation with software-defined radios.
