How to Suggest Enhancements for future versions of PowerSDR

We strongly encourage users of FlexRadio products to make suggestions for product enhancement; no matter how crazy they may seem. This is how we get the ideas to improve our products.

Recently we deployed the FlexRadio HelpDesk (http://helpdesk.flexradio.com), which is a web based incident ticketing and tracking system that allows our support staff to service requests for technical assistance in a more user interactive and efficient manner. Submitting a FlexRadio HelpDesk Enhancement Request ticket is now the way you can make product enhancement suggestions by accessing the FlexRadio HelpDesk and selecting a Ticket Type of "Enhancement Request".

If you are a first time user of the FlexRadio HelpDesk , then you must create a login for yourself so that we can properly receive your correspondences via e-mail. Just click on the Sign Up link (http://helpdesk.flexradio.com/registration) in the top right hand corner of the page to get started.

When creating your HelpDesk account, please include your full name, a valid non-redirected e-mail address (alias e-mail accounts like callsign@arrl.net will not work), enter the security words in the appropriate box and then click on the Sign Me Up button. Once you complete creating your HelpDesk account, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to you to validate your account. It is import that you reply back promptly so we can verify your e-mail account. Failure to do this will result in delays getting feedback from FlexRadio.

If you are a previous user of the FlexRadio HelpDesk, just login using the Login link (http://helpdesk.flexradio.com/login) at the top right hand corner of the FlexRadio HelpDesk web page before submitting your HelpDesk request for support.

As with any product enhancement suggestion, please add an informative, but short description of your issue in the Subject line. Provide a more comprehensive description of your product enhancement suggestion by providing a detailed description of what it is in the Description dialog box. The more detailed information you can provide the better we can understand what you are suggesting and evaluate its viability for doing it. Please do not list several different product enhancement suggestions in one HelpDesk ticket. This will result in the technical support engineer having to divide out the different issues into separate HelpDesk tickets, causing additional delays getting your product enhancement suggestion evaluated.

Once your FlexRadio HelpDesk product enhancement suggestion has been submitted, you will receive a confirmation e-mail after it has been forwarded to the Product Management Group for evaluation. The Product Management group will post your product enhancement suggestion on the HelpDesk Assistance Center's Feature Request listing for user ranking and comments. We actively use this information for evaluating the viability of the product enhancement suggestion.

We have recently deployed the FlexRadio HelpDesk ( http://helpdesk.flexradio.com ), which is a web based incident ticketing and tracking system that allows our support staff to service requests for technical assistance in a more user interactive and efficient manner. By utilizing a web based support "portal", you can manage and track your service requests for support more easily. It only makes sense to properly triage support issues using the HelpDesk process and escalate your issues to the level of software defects once they have been thoroughly vetted by our technical support staff.

Therefore going forward, if you suspect that you have uncovered a software defect or "bug", all you need to do is access the FlexRadio HelpDesk at anytime and submit a request for support by selecting the Ticket Type of "Support - Amateur Products" . This includes nights, weekends and holidays when we are not available to answer your support requests by phone or direct e-mail.

As with any support request, please add an informative, but short description of your issue in the Subject line. Provide a more comprehensive description of your issue by providing a detailed description of what it is and the steps taken to create and/or reproduce the issue in the Description dialog box. The more detailed information you can initially provide the shorter the time to issue resolution or determining it is a software defect. Please do not list several different problems in one support ticket. This will result in the technical support engineer having to divide out the different issues into separate HelpDesk tickets, causing additional delays getting your initial issue addressed.

Once your FlexRadio HelpDesk ticket has been submitted, you will receive an incident or "case" number that is unique to your support request and it will be assigned to a support engineer who will contact you once they have taken ownership your support ticket.

If in the course of working with you on your support request it is determined that your issue is actually a software defect, then the support engineer will be responsible for converting your support request into a software defect and submitting your incident information to the Engineering staff for further analysis.

The Reflector is an e-mail mailing list where you can submit questions and comments and have them delivered to the thousands of FlexRadio users world wide instantly. It is also the place to get up to date news about FlexRadio Systems products and software.

FlexRadio Systems encourages you to sign up for our email Reflector. This is yet another way that we can endorse the idea of customers helping customers. We want to be clear that this list is not a replacement for our forums, but rather is another way of communicating with FlexRadio staff and customers.

There are daily and weekly digest options if the Reflector traffic begins to overwhelm you. RSS (Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)) is a XML format for delivering regularly changing web based content to a user by utilizing a RSS "reader" (aka "feed reader" and "aggregator") to automatically query the web site that has RSS capabilities (aka "a feed") and download new content for you with little to no intervention. RSS is a convenience for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in and saves time by not needing to visit each site individually.

The FlexRadio Systems Knowledge Center has RSS 2.0 capabilities to syndicate content. This is indicated by the RSS logo found in the article listings headers for various KC information zones, such as the latest KB articles.

There are several levels of granularity for RSS feeds you can subscribe to depending on the amount of information you want to receive. Along with the article listings headers for various KC information zones, you can also subscribe to individual articles by using the RSS logo icon on the right hand side of each article.

Now that you know where to access the RSS feeds in the Knowledge Center, you will need an RSS reader to subscribe to them. A variety of RSS Readers are available for different platforms. Some popular feed readers include Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows - integrates with Outlook). There are also a number of web-based feed readers available. My Yahoo, Bloglines, and Google Reader are popular web-based feed readers.

Setup the RSS feeder of your choice as per the program's installation instructions and then add the RSS syndicated content from the Knowledge Center you want to download. Literally it is that easy.

Note: The FlexRadio Forums also have RSS 2.0 syndication capabilities so you can collect content from the Forums as well.

My Postings to the Reflector are Not Showing up?

The most common reason your post to the Reflector is not showing up on the Reflector is because you are sending the e-mail post from an e-mail account that is different than the one you used to sign up for the Reflector.

It is a requirement that all postings for the Reflector are originated from the e-mail account you used to sign up for Reflector posting privileges. This is an anti-SPAM mechanism to help prevent unwanted e-mail from flooding the Reflector.

The most common problem is people using an e-mail "redirect" account such as the ones offered by the ARRL. You can not use an e-mail address such as w1aw@arrl.net to sign up for the Reflector. It must be an actual e-mail address.

Refer to Item #1 in the new-subscriber welcome message e-mail that was sent to you when you successfully subscribed to the Reflector for more information.

For new users, once you receive your SDR-1000, it may seem like a daunting task to get the SDR-1000 and PowerSDR operational. Don’t worry. It really isn’t that difficult and to make things easier, there is a “Getting Started” web page that lists step-by-step guides on the FlexRadio web site that will walk you through the steps necessary to get your SDR-1000 up and running in no time at all.

Just make sure you follow the instructions in order and you shouldn’t have any issues. But in case you do run into any difficulties, you can contact one of our FlexRadio support engineers. The HPSDR is an open source (GNU type) hardware and software project intended as a "next generation" Software Defined Radio (SDR) for use by Radio Amateurs ("hams") and Short Wave Listeners (SWLs). The SoftRock-40 is a small, low-cost, good-performing 40-meter "software defined radio" receiver that plugs into a computer USB port and delivers I-Q audio signals to the computer's sound card. It was designed by Tony Parks, KB9YIG and Bill Tracey, KD5TFD as an "SDR sampler project" for hams everywhere to easily try out software defined radio. This way a great many hams can see for themselves the incredible performance that can be achieved by having just a little inexpensive hardware working in conjunction with some powerful (free) software running on the PC. Receiver performance is simply amazing ... MDS readings of of -128 dBm are typical, with the 1 dB compression level at about -20 dBm!

The DSP-10 is an amateur-radio, software-defined 2-meter transceiver that can be built at home. It operates not only on SSB, FM and CW, but also on four Weak-Signal modes. Features are tailored to operation on VHF, UHF and Microwave frequencies.

A three-part article by Bob Larkin, W7PUA, published in QST magazine for September, October and November of 1999 describes the project. Copies of the article can be downloaded from the ARRL Web site. The transceiver hardware consists of a single PC board for the RF parts and an Analog Devices EZ-Kit Lite demo board for the I-F and audio processing. This is all controlled by any PC through a serial port. All programs are available as 'Free Software.'

What is Teamspeak?

Teamspeak is a web based group conferencing server which supports up to 50 simultaneous conversations. This was instituted October 2004 for FlexRadio users to have worldwide voice communications 24x7x365. Except for occasional brief server maintenance, there have been very few outages.

The only thing you will need to have to get on Teamspeak is an Internet connection and a PC microphone, soundcard and speakers. Just install the client software in Windows or Linux and you can connect to the server, and chat with many other SDR owners. Even Dial-up connections work fine!

You can find all the information you need in the links in red in this message or in my Signature. Please read the Quickstart Guide for helpful set up hints before attempting the connection. Then click on the link to get the Client install program from the internet and install per the Quick Start Guide.

One of the best open source packages ever developed for scientific computing is FFTW. The software package/API won the prestigious Wilkinson prize for numerical computing in 1999. The home page for FFTW is http://www.fftw.org

We have compiled the latest version using both Microsoft Visual Studio 6^tm and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003™.

Our versions and Microsoft Windows Visual Studio™ files are released under the GPL license as published elsewhere on this site. The source and project and solutions files, as well as release versions of several libraries with test functions are in the zip file below.

We are also beginning to develop with an outstanding package of signal, vector, and image processing routines that is free open source and which we hope will replace Intel SPL. See the blurb we have included below from the project web site. In the dynamically linked libraries, they are exported using a C class. The project web page is http://www.vsipl.org/ .

VSIPL™ stands for the Vector Signal Image Processing Library. It is an application programming interface (API) defined by an open standard developed by embedded signal and image processing hardware and software vendors, academia, application developers, and government labs. A number of hardware and software vendors have developed VSIPL products, and it is being increasingly used by developers who desire a highly efficient and portable computational middleware for signal and image processing applications.

We have gotten the distribution TASP VSIPL C Plus Plus done by R. Judd (found at http://www.vsipl.org/software) to compile and run using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003™. Our versions and the Microsoft Windows Visual Studio .NET 2003™ solution and project files are included as well as static, dynamically linked with and without fftw versions inVSIPL.
